Known as a leading representative of an emerging generation of Beijing painters focusing on the negotiations of history and utopia through the depth of the picture plane, Qiu Xiaofei constructs textured images in both his two-dimensional work on canvas and his installation projects, which call into being sculpted objects of fiberglass buried beneath thick layers of paint, creating an effect more haunting than illusionistic. His recent work is concerned with madness and the collective imaginary of memory.
